Jamie Burgess
Jamie’s love of improvising began at high school in NZ, where he trained with Patrick Duffy, the Shenanigan Brothers and the Christchurch Court Jesters.
In 2000, he performed as part of the Christchurch Buskers’ Festival with ‘Cleverfools’, having graduated from the National Academy of Singing & Performing Arts (NASDA) with a qualification in Musical Theatre Performance.
In 2005 he was introduced to long-form in Wellington, where he became resident musician for the Wellington Improv Troupe (WiT) playing seasons of Maestro, Improvised Soap Operas, Improv-Divas and various other formats, as well as running workshops on song-prov and musical magic. Jamie was the resident musician for the very first NZ Improv Festival back in 2008, he also played with The Improvisors, and accompanied Derek Flores regularly for his one-man comedy shows as part of New Zealand Comedy (Laugh) festivals from 2007 to 2010.In Australia, he was resident musician with The Improv Conspiracy from 2011 to 2013, then joined Impromptunes for the ‘Completely Improvised Musical’ at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Fringe World Perth, the ‘Puppets’ musical and ‘The Bachela-la-la’. For the MICF he has played alongside international acts Mark Watson, Stephen K Amos, Ross Noble, Katherine Ryan and Wanda Sykes, and national treasures Joel Creasy, Tash York, Dolly Diamond and Reuben Kaye.
He has toured Australasia alongside Amanda Buckley for ‘The Musical Toolkit’, running workshops in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and at NZIF in 2018 and 2019. In 2019 he was the resident musician for the Impro Melbourne Theatresports Schools Challenge.Since the start of the pandemic, Jamie has toured Australia improvising and entertaining dinner guests as the awful hotelier Basil Fawlty with ‘The Faulty Towers Dining Experience’.
